Sex Work in Ancient Greece and Rome

This course will examine the long history and diverse economy of sex work and will scrutinize representations of sex workers of all genders in ancient Greek and Roman literature and material culture. Texts will range from comedy to philosophy and archaeological evidence will include the remains of the famous brothel in Pompeii. We conclude exploring the reception of sex work in American cinematic and literary traditions.
